Boxing & Muay Thai Techniques
Master the fundamental strikes, kicks, and defensive moves used in shadow boxing and pad work training.
Boxing Punches
The six core punches form the foundation of boxing. Each is assigned a number (1-6) used in combination callouts.
Jab (1)
A quick, straight punch thrown with the lead hand. The foundation of all boxing combinations. Used to measure distance, set up power shots, and keep opponents at bay.
Cross (2)
A powerful straight punch thrown with the rear hand. Generates power from hip rotation and weight transfer. The primary power punch in boxing.
Lead Hook (3)
A semi-circular punch thrown with the lead hand targeting the side of the head or body. Devastating at close range with proper technique.
Rear Hook (4)
A hook thrown with the rear hand. Less common but effective when opponents move into range or as a follow-up to a lead hook.
Lead Uppercut (5)
An upward punch thrown with the lead hand. Effective at close range, targeting the chin or body. Great for inside fighting.
Rear Uppercut (6)
A powerful upward punch from the rear hand. One of the most devastating punches when landed cleanly on the chin.
Muay Thai Techniques
Muay Thai — the "Art of Eight Limbs" — uses fists, elbows, knees, and shins.
Teep (Push Kick)
A front push kick used to maintain distance, off-balance opponents, or stop their forward movement. The jab of Muay Thai kicks.
Roundhouse Kick
The signature Muay Thai kick. Thrown with the shin, using full hip rotation for maximum power. Targets the legs, body, or head.
Elbow Strike
Close-range strikes using the point of the elbow. Extremely effective in the clinch. Can be thrown horizontally, diagonally, upward, or as a spinning strike.
Knee Strike
Powerful strikes using the knee, often from the clinch. Straight knees, diagonal knees, and flying knees are all part of the Muay Thai arsenal.
Clinch
The art of controlling your opponent at close range. Muay Thai clinch work involves neck control, sweeps, knees, and elbows.
Low Kick
A roundhouse kick targeting the opponent's thigh or calf. Accumulative damage that can severely limit mobility.
Defensive Techniques
Slip
A slight rotational movement of the upper body to avoid a straight punch. Move your head off the centerline while staying in position to counter.
Bob and Weave
Bending at the knees and waist to duck under hooks and wide punches. Essential for close-range defense.
Parry
Using your hand to redirect an incoming punch away from its target. Requires good timing and creates counter-attacking opportunities.
Block/Check
Using your arms, shins, or hands to absorb incoming strikes. In Muay Thai, checking a kick with your shin is fundamental defense.
Footwork
The foundation of all defense. Proper angles, distance management, and lateral movement keep you safe and create offensive opportunities.
